GETTING ORGANISED

Organising an event may seem daunting, but animals need you! It doesn’t have to be huge or public, small events mean just as much. Just remember, once you decide to hold an event for World Animal Day, the months pass faster than you’d think, so start planning early.

A FEW POINTS TO CONSIDER

Check if any other events are happening in your area on the same day, and if so, perhaps pick a different date to avoid a clash. Get together with your group of anyone helping you and agree on who will be doing what. If you are involving a third party in your event, such as supporting a local shelter, make sure to contact them first in case they have any ideas or suggestions. Don’t be afraid to ask an expert for advice and get permission from local authorities well in advance (even litter picking might need landowner agreement). Keep an eye on the countdown clock on the World Animal Day homepage to track how much time you’ve got left.

PLANNING SOMETHING BIGGER?

If you’re organising a larger, public event, there’s a longer checklist to work through:

Our Pakistan ambassadors, Vets Care Club hosted an educational talk about animal welfare, attended by student veterinarians, to mark World Animal Day in 2017.
  • Risk assessments, insurance and signage
  • Parking, first aid, and toilet facilities
  • Staff or volunteers, plus venue capacity and access for wheelchair users
  • Equipment or generators (borrow or hire)
  • Entertainment licensing for music or film screenings
  • Food regulations, litter picking, waste disposal, and publicity

These lists aren’t exhaustive, and legislation varies by country, so remember to check online for current advice in your area before you get started.

Once the practicalities are sorted, it’s time to spread the word!
