Reflecting on the exhibiting and care of wild animals

In recent years, society has placed many wild animals under human care, and there are numerous opportunities to interact with them. In addition to exhibition facilities such as zoos and aquariums, businesses known as “animal cafes” and the keeping of wild animals in private homes have also become increasingly common.
In this lecture, we will examine the challenges associated with the care of wild animals in these various settings. Is their welfare being adequately safeguarded? Furthermore, if it is not being safeguarded, what measures should be taken? What is the reality of the public health issues that arise when humans become close to these animals?
We hope to provide an opportunity to reflect on the challenges associated with human-wildlife contact and the measures needed moving forward by having an expert speaker discuss the licensing system for wildlife exhibition businesses, such as zoos, and by sharing with you the realities of the countless “animal cafes,” businesses that exploit wild animals for profit and human enjoyment.
