Shelter Open Day
The activity will be organized jointly by Patilen Beyoğlu and the Beyoğlu Municipality Directorate of Veterinary Services at municipal animal shelter.
Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to spend time with the dogs living at the shelter and to take them for walks together with Patilen Beyoğlu volunteers. Each visitor will be accompanied by a volunteer, creating a kind of buddy system so that the public can safely meet the dogs, learn about their personalities, and better understand shelter life and the work carried out by our volunteer team.
During the day, we will also introduce visitors to our ongoing volunteer activities, adoption work and projects carried out in cooperation with the municipality.
An educational session entitled “What Should You Know Before Adopting a Dog?” will also be held. This session will focus especially on the first stages of adoption — the first week, first month and first three months — and will explain what adopters may experience during this adjustment period, what behavioural or emotional changes they may encounter, and how they can help a newly adopted dog settle into its new home successfully.
For children, we will organize a colouring workshop using specially designed and stylized colouring cards based on dogs currently living in our shelter. Through this creative activity, children will get to know individual shelter animals and develop a more personal connection with them.
One of the most meaningful activities of the day will be a children’s awareness workshop called “Our Hearts Beat as One.”
This workshop will be led together by a veterinarian and a medical doctor. The children will first receive simple, age-appropriate information about the human heart and the hearts of animals. Using a stethoscope, they will then listen to their own heartbeat and, under professional supervision, to the heartbeat of an animal.
The purpose of the workshop is to help children understand, through a direct and memorable experience, that humans and animals are both living beings with beating hearts, emotions and physical needs. By combining medical and veterinary knowledge with hands-on participation, the activity aims to build empathy, curiosity and respect for animals from an early age.
Overall, the day will combine shelter visits, dog walking, adoption education, volunteering, children’s creative activities and animal-welfare awareness, allowing visitors to experience the shelter not simply as a place where animals stay, but as a place where meaningful connections and responsible adoption can begin.
