Small Hands, Big Hearts: Students Supporting Shelter Dogs in Bulgaria
To mark World Animal Day, students from XII Primary School ‘Vasil Levski’ in Pernik, Bulgaria, will turn compassion into action. This year’s message invites us to ‘See the world through their eyes.’ At our school, we have decided what we want animals to see when they look at us: love, care and a willingness to act. During the week, pupils will collect dog food, blankets and other essential supplies requested by the Municipal Shelter for Stray Dogs in Pernik. On 4 October, a group of seventh-grade students, accompanied by their teacher, will deliver the donations, meet the shelter team and spend time walking dogs under supervision. The initiative aims to help young people understand that responsible care for animals begins with empathy, practical support and personal involvement. After the visit, the story of the initiative and photographs from the activities will be shared through the school’s official communication channels and within the local community, with the aim of encouraging others, raising awareness and showing that even a small group can make a meaningful difference. This is an organised educational volunteering activity involving students from the school; it is not a public event organised by the school.
