The Foundations of Animal Training
In celebration of World Animal Day, I am opening up free access to my 3-part educational masterclass series for pet guardians, shelter workers, and animal professionals.
Improving welfare goes beyond meeting basic physical needs – it is about how we communicate with animals, give them agency, and replace coercive handling with cooperative care.
Across three practical video sessions, this masterclass covers:
Video 1: The Mechanics of Training & Communication
In the first video, I explain why I think that everyone who lives with an animal is an animal trainer and should take charge of the animal's learning. I introduce 7 ways to get behavior, and the potential fallout of using corrections.
Video 2: The Power of Targeting
In this video (and accompanying practical exercise) I teach a fun game that allows animals to learn a very useful and versatile behaviour in just minutes!
Video 3: Core Tools & The 6 Foundation Behaviors
In the final video I explain two useful training strategies as well as how to choose the first 6 essential foundation behaviors to teach any animal.
The series is entirely free to watch online. Sign up here: https://illis.se/en/foundations-signup/
